چکیده

Variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to image oxide-supported nanoclusters of Au at temperatures from 300 to 450 K and oxygen pressures from 10−10 to 4 Torr. Oxygen-induced morphological changes of the TiO2(1 × 2) reconstruction are apparent at room temperature and prolonged exposure (∼3 × 103 L (langmuir)) at 10−4 Torr oxygen. Gold clusters with diameters smaller than ∼4 nm are unstable toward sintering at ca. 450 K and oxygen pressures >10−1 Torr. Oxygen at pressures >10−4 Torr weakens the interaction between the gold cluster and the titania support. Increasing the sample temperature to >300 K facilitates disruption of the cluster–support interaction.

In situ scanning tunneling microscopy of individual supported metal clusters at reactive gas pressures from 10À8 to 104 Pa

An experimental apparatus has been designed and an approach developed for imaging individual oxide supported nanoparticles with scanning tunneling microscopy ~STM! during their nucleation, growth, alloying, and ‘‘real world’’ chemical, thermal, and other in situ treatments. By careful selection of the tunneling conditions and using the STM tip to index the surface, it is demonstrated that prese...

Enhanced bonding of gold nanoparticles on oxidized TiO2(110).

We studied the nucleation of gold clusters on TiO2(110) surfaces in three different oxidation states by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy. The three TiO2(110) supports chosen were (i) reduced (having bridging oxygen vacancies), (ii) hydrated (having bridging hydroxyl groups), and (iii) oxidized (having oxygen adatoms). At room temperature, gold nanoclusters nucleate homogeneously on...

Role of the Support Effects on the Catalytic Activity of Gold Clusters: A Density Functional Theory Study

It is demonstrated that the support effects play a crucial role in the gold nanocatalysis. Two types of support are considered—the “inert” support of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) with the N and B vacancy defects and the “active” support of rutile TiO2(110). It is demonstrated that Au and Au2 can be trapped effectively by the vacancy defects in h-BN. In that case, the strong adsorption on the ...

A computational investigation of H2 adsorption and dissociation on Au nanoparticles supported on TiO2 surface.

The specific role played by small gold nanoparticles supported on the rutile TiO2( 110) surface in the processes of adsorption and dissociation of H2 is discussed. It is demonstrated that the molecular and dissociative adsorption of H2 on Au(n) clusters containing n = 1, 2, 8 and 20 atoms depends on cluster size, geometry structure, cluster flexibility and the interaction with the support mater...

Reaction Kinetics and Polarization-Modulation Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (PM-IRAS) Investigation of CO Oxidation over Supported Pd-Au Alloy Catalysts

Pd-Au bimetallic model catalysts, synthesized either as thin films on Mo(110) or as nanoparticles on a TiO2 thin film, were used in CO oxidation at both low (1 × 10-7 Torr) and elevated (8-16 Torr) CO pressures. Alloying with Au forms isolated Pd sites that are incapable of dissociating O2. This inability causes reactivity loss at low reactant pressures. Moreover, alloying also electronically m...
